Customers praised this shave soap for its "excellent" performance and intense menthol cooling that creates an "ice cold" sensation. The black licorice scent is polarizing - loved by some, disliked by others. "Great lather" and slickness were consistently noted. Most found the menthol level perfect, though a few experienced skin irritation. Post-shave feel described as moisturizing and refreshing.

I. NEED. MORE. LICORICE! I absolutely love everything about this. It doesnt have as much menthol as Adopted Acre's chococaliente inferno BUT its still cold. Just more of a relaxing freeze like an ice cold pillow. My only complaint is that Im not sure if the clay was fully mixed in. There was soot everywhere Not a huge fan of that. That said...I need more. I would love a balm and EDP as well.
Performance is classic Stirling. But this scent is simply wonderful.
This is an excellent shave soap. A great scent and the menthol level is perfect. I really like the other glacial shave soaps, this one could easily become a favorite. It is a definite must have !
The good....I received this as a free sample. Okay, so I REALLY want somehting that is strong. This is very strong. I wish every scent they made had this much staying power. Also the performance is great. The bad....the scent didn't do it for me. It was a cross between Licorice and Vicks Vapor Rub. To me, it just did not work. Believe me I really like the strength of this and wish all Stirling soaps were a punch in the face like this. But the scent was just not for me.
Love this scent, best shave soap I’ve used !
If you like black liquorice and menthol buy it.
Scent strength 8/10.
This stuff should come with a frost bite warning. As soon as it hits your lips you know there is a lot of menthol in it. It has a weak scent of liquorish to it which is necessarily over powered by the menthol. Same great shave soap though. Can't wait to try the Iceberg Island, tomorrow.
Awesome smell, Great lather, will definitely buy more shaving soaps from Stirling, Great job Rod and Mandy.
Much like black licorice, I can see how the smell of this soap is polarizing, but I love it. Bottom line, for those of us who do like black licorice (and benefit by getting all the black jelly beans from those who don't...), give this a try. I'm pretty sure you'll like it
Bought this for the first time last week. Wanted to try it for the summer months. Got the splash and an unscented glacial balm to complete the tri-fecta! It's an awesome combo! One of the best shaves I've ever had with any soap! Wonderful scent of black liquorice candy! Beautiful burn and cool; and post shave is fab too!
Can't recommend it highly enough. Give it a try!
I bought this soap trying to match it with a Asian spice inspired cologne I wear. This soap doesn't disappoint in that regard. Great soap, great company. Thanks Stirling!
This is a must for shave soap rotations. This first great scent happens while you form the lather. While you apply the the lather during your shave the
menthol kicks in and your face gets COLD & REFRESHED. This scent is just like a bag of Black Jelly beans. Like all Stirling Shave Soaps the lather is very slick and reduces razor burn.
I never thought I cared for anise, but I really enjoyed this soap. Menthol is strong , but not over powering. Excellent is the word for this soap.
I'm sorry I couldn't get past the strong smell. It smells like lickerish and I hate the smell of it and don't like lickerish. Mind you this was a sample, Im new to this.
Exactly what I was looking for - an ice cold, comfortable shave.
You better like anise , I could smell it when I opened my mailbox !
I do like the scent so it didn't bother me too much, but I will say they know how to blend it well at stirling. Once you add water and work it the menthol kicks in and a new scent develops that's amazing . Matching it with a cologne was my only problem, ended up going with van cleef midnight in Paris.
The first time I tried Glacial Obsidian was back in 2014. It was fantastic then but now it's PERFECT. If you love the scent of black licorice and the feeling of bitter-cold menthol, then this soap is your ticket to Paradise. The lather of this soap explodes off your brush and buries your face for a wonderful, frigid shave that feels so smooth, moisturizing, and soothing!
This is my favorite soap made by Stirling. Also love Anise and Black Ice. The slickness is off the charts not to mention that awesome scent. Yes, it smells like licorice.
All my years of buying soaps, and I've bought many, there are only a few I've settled on. This purchase is a no brainer, right up there with the higher end stuff.
Smells Great (like anise and menthol). Great shave, feels smooth, face feels amazing after. Very nice menthol levels. Hit or miss depending on if you like anise.
This soap has a great licorice smell and lathers up beautifully. Performance is top notch. But I had a problem where my neck began to sting and burn before I even finished my first pass. I've used it twice more, and both times there is the burning feeling. I also got a sample of the Lemon Chill, which also has a lot of menthol, but no burning. I wish I had tried a sample first, because I can't use this soap any more.
At first this soap was too cold for me, but the more I used it, the more I liked it. After ordering the sample puck, and quickly ran out, I ordered the full jar size. This is great if you like menthol, and want a typical great shave from Stirling soap.
This soap performs well. Though all Stirling soaps do for me. Load time is great, but I feel like I have to work this just a tad longer to get lather I want. Though all high menthol soaps I have this with, and this one has the menthol!
The scent on this is a beautiful and mouthwatering anise. The menthol chill is immediately present and just keeps building. I can not say enough how much I am enjoying this soap!
So even though I've placed myself on a purchasing hiatus because I already have enough stuff, I simply had to break that rule and order this soap. Upon receiving the sample, I noticed the smell was amazing. It has a strong herbal scent of mostly anise, which I absolutely love! It lathered very well without too much effort and provided an excellent shave surface. The resulting shave, thanks to the generous concentration of menthol, was exhilarating. Your face will begin to tingle while you're reapplying soap for passes two, three, or more. I'm very eager to see how this will perform while paired with the accompanying aftershave. I hear great things and I'm very excited to try it for myself.
I have yet to regret a single Stirling purchase and I'm fairly certain that day will never come. If you're on the fence about this soap, I implore you to go ahead and order the full-sized Puck. I strongly believe that you will be ordering it anyway once you have the opportunity to try the sample. Happy shaving!
This stuff is freezing! To me, it seems that this glacial is colder than the wintergreen but maybe its not, just seems like it. At first, I didn't mind the anise smell but it has started to turn me away. I don't really like anise so that's my own fault but besides that the soap is great! Ive now been turned into a menthol head! Thanks Rod & Mandy!!
I got this sample thinking I wouldn't like it........Boy, was I wrong. Wonderful feel on my face during shaving. I will alternate this with Glacial Lemon Chill.
I'm not a fan of black licorice candy but the scent really great on me. Plus the high menthol really made this an amazing product. So glad it's back.
I wasn't aware it was licorice when I got it and it smelled absolutely awful. But after using it for a few weeks it has really grown on me. I would probably buy it again but I have a few soaps and this is a pretty big puck.
Standard quality Stirllng (= excellent), it's just that the scent was just a little beyond licorice tending toward Nyquil. But with the menthol level just right so this is one that will stay in my rotation.
The black Licorice scent in the glacial obsidian scent reminds me of so many Jeager Bombs in College. It's great scent and quite possibly the Coldest shave I've experienced from Stirling, and my favorite soap is Frozen Tundra. In these overly warm and humid summer months I have been shaving with this soap every day for a week, as the cold wakes me up in the morning. Great soap, standard excellent Stirling lather, not for the faint ice cold menthol.
Love the Stirling Glacial Obsidian. Great post shave benefits (like all Stirling soaps) and a great blast of menthol chill. If you like black licorice, you'll love Glacial Obsidian. I have the matching ASB and it is a fantastic performer at a great price.
I've had a full puck of this for a few months but was waiting for warm weather to break it out. I just had the first shave tonight and I'm overwhelmed. I love black licorice anyway and the additional of menthol makes this a winning combination for me. Now I need to order the aftershave splash to go along. Highgly recommended if you think you'd like this pairing.
